West-Bound

Who goes to Victoria/Vancouver without a rain jacket????

I started my journey to CIS Field Hockey Nationals at about 5:30am this morning...being delayed by some Saskatchewan man that was on the wrong flight - so we left late...which means that I missed the U of T vs Pandas game at 12:20pm. Since I had time to find a cheaper way to Vic from Vancouver Airport, I was able to take a bus across. Getting on without 30 other rugby players was a sad realization that my years of playing rugby at the U of A had come to an end. Things were starting to sink in... so with a bit of Damien Rice, rainy weather on the ferry, I had myself quite the nostalgic moment.

So far... 3-1 vs UBC (Loss), 2-1 vs UofT (Loss). Carly Fleming scored both goals.

Saturday was a day of MAGIC. That is the ONLY way I can explain it...actually talent, urgency and heart is probably more like it. Pandas played UVIC, who they haven't beaten all year and pulls off this NICE penalty stroke. Traut walks in and shoots - scores! A beauty! Bunny Hughes comes up with this sweet sweep from the left side of the post and makes it 2-1. Player of the game was Jenny Peacock.

Guelph - later in the day.... scores on us first. Not a good sign. Bunny equalizes and Morch makes it 2-1. Player of the game for this game was Jen Cous.

Meanwhile.... Bears Soccer lost in an unfortunate shoot out against UVIC, to take Canwest silver and not advance to Nationals. Goalscorers for the weekend: Milan Timotijevic (2), and Kevin Perry.

Pandas Soccer: Amanda Black (2) and Heather Lund cleans out UVIC for a bronze medal finish and not advance to Nationals. Other goals this weekend, Heather Lund with another one, andCarleigh Miller.

Bears football...um, I was watching this one on Shaw TV. Positive note? You guys look good in your gear. Bears lost to Calgary 45-13. Mike Wasylyniuk with the lone TD for the Bears.... and a shout out to Matt Jarvis - you were on fire.

Pandas FH made it to the final... against the T-birds. Long story short... did not go well. We lost 6-0, although, second at Nationals when you weren't expected to make it there is golden! Bunny Hughes was player of the game. CIS all stars were Bunny Hughes and Jackie Trautman. Congrats Ladies! I'm proud of you!

Both hockey teams cleans out the T-birds. Bears win 6-2 and 8-1. Are you ready for this list of goals scorers? Here goes.... first game: Eric Hunter (2 - good job Eric!), Sean Ringrose, Ian McDonald, Dale Mahovsky and Jason Fransoo (yay :) ) Second game: Ian McDonald (2), Derek Ryan, Colin Joe, Greg Gardner, Reade Wolansky, Kyle Fecho and Chad Klassen...... wow.
- Kyle Fecho is Hudsons Athlete of the Week.

Pandas Hockey: 8-0 and 3-2 win over the T-birds. Goal scorers for the first game: Tarin Podloski (3), Alana Cabana (2), Leah Copeland, Emily Burton, and Stephanie Ramsay. Second game: Sarah Hilworth, Alana Cabana and Stephanie Ramsay.

Bears Basketball: Defeat the Wesmen. 74-56 Jamaal Bucknor with 16 points and 71-68 Harvey Bradford with 16 points. Good job boys!

Pandas Basketball ... ends their weekend with a split. 77-40 win, Nicole Clarke with 19 points. 58-64 loss, Marisa Haylett with 18 points.

GO PANDAS - GO BEARS

Wednesday, October 28, 2009

...Endings = New beginnings

Okay so ... let's take it a week back. Pandas rugby faced Calgary in a battle in the snow, which I might add, was FREAKIN' cold. We won 71-0. Players of the game were Forward - Prop Stacie Becker... (can I just take credit for giving a pass which led to her scoring? No? Okay I'll be quiet)... and Britt "Killer" Repchuk. We trekked it to the land of Pronghorns, and ended up playing on turf - losing 22-7. It felt like a good game, also certain things did not go as planned. We hosted Can-west in Sherwood Park this past weekend, beating UBC in a tough game.. 19-15. In the Final, we fell one man short, 14 on 15... losing 30-0 after spending 5 minutes at their try line, failing to score before half time. Honorable mention for that game goes to Marlene "Crusher" Nedved in the backs and Carmen Hobbs in the forwards. Can West Allstars were:
- Allison "Pun" Lamoureaux - Prop
- Annika Eriksson - Scrum half
- Karlee "Rocket" Carbert - Full back

Field Hockey = Took a pounding against UBC and faced Calgary this passed weekend. Morchie ended up scoring two goals in Saturday's game, beating Calgary 2-0. Unfortunately, in Sunday's game, after suspicious reffing the Pandas lost in the last 5 seconds, 1-0. The Pandas qualify to go to Nationals after Halloween in Victoria... and I'll be there! GO PANDAS!

Pandas Volleyball = Grabs a win over Calgary at their home opener. Good job ladies! I was watching,...it was close for most part, but I think our good looks helped...

Bears Volleyball= Say what? Loss to Calgary? How so? ... hoping to see some anger on court when they face the Wolfpack. I was grateful to have a quick peak at this game as well.

Soccer Pandas: Had an extravagant 9-0 win over Regina, and a 1-0 loss to UBC, 3-0 loss to TWU.
Soccer Bears: Saw two ties against Calgary/Lethbridge, and losses to UBC 1-0 and TWU 1-0.
Both teams are shy of a Top 10 rating in CIS, placing at a 4th spot in Can-West... the Can-west Final Four is coming up - both teams face Sask this coming weekend.

Football: The Bears saw a win and a loss in the last two weeks. Regina 33-22 W, and Saskatchewan 39-03 L. This coming weekend is going to be THE WEEKEND, to determine whether the boys can stay alive... see if you make sense of this:

"Alberta and the Regina Rams,....are tied for the final playoff spot, while the Bisons are already in. What that means is that any Regina loss gives the Bears the final spot, regardless of the Bears-Dinos game, but if Manitoba loses while Alberta and Regina win, the Bears are out due to tie-breaking procedures. In this situation, Regina would claim the third-place berth via point differential versus the Bisons and Bears, and then Manitoba would get the fourth-place berth due to head-to-head match-up superiority over Alberta" - I'm confused...???

The following players are in their final season of eligibility: Symon Pfau (DB), Jeff Wollin (RB) as well as Jozzy and Bass are all in their final season of eligibility.

Pandas Hockey - Holla! Girls are rockin' the beats ya'll...okay okay. Good win over Manitoba... 6-1, 4-1 and a sweep over the Huskies 2-1, 3-2... Fairfield I hope you feel better soon.

Bears Hockey - Skated over Sask! Saw a nice little fight the one night... their goalie went nuts! At one point our penalty box was so full I couldn't keep track. We still managed to pull out the two wins. Lookin' good no. 10!

Golf is done has ended as well..... for now.

Wrestling: Katherine Martin wins gold at the Pan-Am Games in Mexico in the 72 kg weight category. The Bears/Pandas went down to Calgary this past weekend. Ring worm anyone? (jk)

The Cross Country Stewart Cup takes place this weekend at Hawrelak Park. Let's support! Shout out to Georgette: She has been selected as part of the coaching staff for the 2009 IAAF track and field World Youth Championships, July 8-12, in Bressanone/Brixen, Italy. Congrats!

Top 3 Athletes:

1. Tiffany Proudfoot - Pandas VB; CIS Athlete of the Week, Hudsons Athlete of the Week
2. Jackie Trautman - Field Hockey; Can-West Player of the Year
3. Katie Borbely - Pandas Hockey

1. Chad Klassen - Bears Hockey
2. Jason Was - Bears Wrestling
3. Spencer Leiske - Bears VB

GO BEARS! GO PANDAS!

Advice for the week: Don't study in SUB.

And the snows here....

This past weeks recap features lots of turkey, snow and midterms.

Field hockey vs UVIC:

We saw a 0-0 tie and a 0-1 loss for the Pandas as they traveled to UVIC...staying in third place. J.T. (Jackie Trautman) had a good 5-goal streak and we're hoping she'll give us another gun-show against UBC and Calgary in the weeks to come. Honorable mention goes to Tory Spencer - Pandas Goalie; she's fierce and she's loud, watch out!

Pandas Volleyball Pre-season:

My favourite tall individuals with awesome smooth skin, travelled to Canmore if I'm not mistaken, and played UofC. They ended up with a frustrating loss on the first day 3-0, and a 3-1 win the next day. All I can say is..... "No one likes the Dinos". I'm looking forward to the Pandas Home Opener October 23rd/24th!! We'll get the swim team out with body paint!

Just a quick mention to the Bears Volleyball - so far they have been on a good winning streak.... Good show boys! Good show! Can-am is THIS weekend...like right now.

Golfers recap:

Word on the street..... Jen McLean - a very colorful character indeed, and Mike Stepaniuk are the top golfers for the bears/Pandas Golf Teams. Another thing I've heard, is that the Bears are having a bit of a tough go compared to the women, but we're hoping that will change (hint: Call Tiger Woods).

Men's hockey is underway....

They had a bit of a 3-2 upset in a shootout against Calgary but managed to drown the Dinos 9-2. Good job boys! The list for goal scorers goes as follows:
- Ian McDonald (2)
- Chad Klassen
- Mark Ashton
- Derek Ryan
- Reade Wolansky
- Brian Woolger
- Mike MacAngus
- Jesse Gimblett

Phew!

and...therefore, Reade Wolansky is the Canada West Male Athlete of the Week!

Pandas Hockey:

Leah Copeland was this week's Hudsons Athlete of the Week. Alana Cabana scored 3 goals against Regina in their double take over Thanksgiving. We'll see how the do for the Manitoba re-match this weekend, although I just heard they are winning 2-0. (Go Vinge!)

Crosscountry - Honorable mention to Jamie Weikum (Top finisher in the Huskie Open earlier in October) and Paula Findley (For her gold medal win in the women's under-23 event at the world triathlon championships back in September)

Top 3 Athletes:

1. Leah Copeland - Pandas Hockey
2. Alana Cabana - Pandas Hockey
3. Tory Spencer - Pandas Field Hockey

1. Reade Wolansky - Bears Football
2. Ian Macdonald - Bears Hockey
3. Dan Bass - Bears Football

So far - so good!

This is the official first post, but not something that I've randomly sought to achieve over night. I started doing this last year, but I'm officially actually posting it this time and granting athletes access to this blog. Yes, you might say I'm a loser but if you know me, you probably understand my need to do this since I love sport and yeah... U of A athletics. I'm a chump, what can I say.

Basically, we all hang out on the Internet, and this is by far the easiest way of sending information to one another. The purpose you may ask? Well, I would like to further promote sports at the U of A and help establish our athletes in the sports community and the community in general. And, to maybe brag a bit on how awesome our athletes are... not too mention, by far the best looking group of people I have ever met.

My team: Rugby.

Pandas Rugby has welcomed back some veteran players such as Canadian Super Prop Nikki Tyminski whose had some unfortunate ankle issues, and now has suffered a bit of a meniscus injury. Despite this she is still a great leader on and off the field and will hopefully be back in action for the bout against Lethbridge/Calgary. Another great force in the forwards is "Pun" = Punisher, ...a nickname given to her round about the time she was playing for the u/23 Canadian Squad in 2005. She played for our east rivals Western Ontario, but has now come back to the city she was born in to complete her Education after degree. After taking a year off due to regulation, she is now back in action and definitely someone to look out for. In the backs, we have Annika and Erika... two solid runners and hard crashers that we're grateful to have on our team. Some speedy gals include, J9 (Janine), Rocket (Karlee), Karla and Marlene (aka "Crusher"). As we welcome back the vets, we also welcome the great new potential in the rookies stepping up, hence why my number three spot for my top female athlete to look out for will be:

* Allison Fairbairn - Fly half. She has a great boot and proved to keep UBC out of our end during last weekend's game. "Offense wins games, Defense wins Championships" (Correct me if I'm wrong).

Season so far... 10-0 defeat vs UBC, 36-0 defeat vs UVIC.

Field Hockey:

They started out with an explosive performance against our ever so common rivals - U of C. The girls went on to a 1-0 loss to UVIC and a tie, at home. Traveling to Calgary - I think they must have drank bad coffee that day cause the first game was rough, although my top athlete pick played a nice hat-trick on the Dinos winning the Sunday game 4-2. Coming home to face UBC was a different story, smashing in the second goal with seconds left, shy of a tie losing 3-2. ALTHOUGH...dun dun dun.... on Sunday they clipped the Birds' wings with a 1-0 win over UBC. Jackie Trautman, that flick of yours is beautiful, and did you know that it's a very rare thing to achieve? It was a chilly, wet day for Field Hockey but from my view... a great day to win. "Ici cles, balls of ice", that's my description of how hard the ball would be in this weather after Jen Foster took a hit to the jaw. Carly P has a nack for having balls fly at her... but her knee is OKAY. We're looking forward to upcoming results against the Vikes and T-birds to see how the cards will be dealt. Shout out to the Tony and Kinch for recovering from broken hands, and getting back ont he field. Good luck!

Pandas Soccer:

I've been fortunate enough to see the girls play twice so far this year, and they are looking good from where I was standing! They had a few good wins over the past few weekends, then ending the last weekend off with two ties against Fraser Valley and UVic. But the greatest win from these girls so far would have to be against the Bisons. I was in the hotel in Vic and the Bisons were staying in our hotel and I just giggled every time I saw them. Good job ladies, keep it up! Fro is my number #3 pick for her defensive/offensive effort, stamina and leadership, not too mention she has a great sense of humour. Amanda Black gets a VERY honorable mention for her CanWest athlete of the week!

Bears Football:

Okay so I wasn't too happy with the battle against UBC, but the Sask game was phenomenal and I'm glad they beat them! Tough little twist against the Bisons 20-13, but I'm hoping they'll come up strong for the next game. Hudsons Athlete of the week was Wasylyniuk, and CIS Defensive player of the week was Jason Hetherington, my number #1 male athlete pick. For Tendayi, he places #3, ...being an offensive tyrant and playing through a broken hand. Can't wait for the next game boys! PS: Joe thanks for teaching my how to two-step.

Bears Soccer:

I've seen the boys play as well. Good looking - lots of facial hair. This passed weekend sought to see quite a few yellow cards.... 2 for UofA and 3 for Fraser Valley. Alberta now sits at 5-1-2, which is not too bad. I'd like to see win over Trinity please! Bears pick is Kevin Perry for his goal contribution, and honorable mention to my pal Cam Black.

Reflecting back on my Top 3 athletes that you should keep an eye out for:

1. Jackie Trautman - Pandas Field Hockey
2. Allison Fairbairn - Pandas Rugby
3. Fro Mayer - Pandas Soccer

1. Jason Hetherington - Bears Football
2. Kevin Perry - Bears Soccer
3. Tendayi Jozzy - Bears Football

HOCKEY is starting up... Bears have out performed once again, so I think this might be a golden season.

I'm out for now.
