So far - so good!

This is the official first post, but not something that I've randomly sought to achieve over night. I started doing this last year, but I'm officially actually posting it this time and granting athletes access to this blog. Yes, you might say I'm a loser but if you know me, you probably understand my need to do this since I love sport and yeah... U of A athletics. I'm a chump, what can I say.

Basically, we all hang out on the Internet, and this is by far the easiest way of sending information to one another. The purpose you may ask? Well, I would like to further promote sports at the U of A and help establish our athletes in the sports community and the community in general. And, to maybe brag a bit on how awesome our athletes are... not too mention, by far the best looking group of people I have ever met.

My team: Rugby.

Pandas Rugby has welcomed back some veteran players such as Canadian Super Prop Nikki Tyminski whose had some unfortunate ankle issues, and now has suffered a bit of a meniscus injury. Despite this she is still a great leader on and off the field and will hopefully be back in action for the bout against Lethbridge/Calgary. Another great force in the forwards is "Pun" = Punisher, ...a nickname given to her round about the time she was playing for the u/23 Canadian Squad in 2005. She played for our east rivals Western Ontario, but has now come back to the city she was born in to complete her Education after degree. After taking a year off due to regulation, she is now back in action and definitely someone to look out for. In the backs, we have Annika and Erika... two solid runners and hard crashers that we're grateful to have on our team. Some speedy gals include, J9 (Janine), Rocket (Karlee), Karla and Marlene (aka "Crusher"). As we welcome back the vets, we also welcome the great new potential in the rookies stepping up, hence why my number three spot for my top female athlete to look out for will be:

* Allison Fairbairn - Fly half. She has a great boot and proved to keep UBC out of our end during last weekend's game. "Offense wins games, Defense wins Championships" (Correct me if I'm wrong).

Season so far... 10-0 defeat vs UBC, 36-0 defeat vs UVIC.

Field Hockey:

They started out with an explosive performance against our ever so common rivals - U of C. The girls went on to a 1-0 loss to UVIC and a tie, at home. Traveling to Calgary - I think they must have drank bad coffee that day cause the first game was rough, although my top athlete pick played a nice hat-trick on the Dinos winning the Sunday game 4-2. Coming home to face UBC was a different story, smashing in the second goal with seconds left, shy of a tie losing 3-2. ALTHOUGH...dun dun dun.... on Sunday they clipped the Birds' wings with a 1-0 win over UBC. Jackie Trautman, that flick of yours is beautiful, and did you know that it's a very rare thing to achieve? It was a chilly, wet day for Field Hockey but from my view... a great day to win. "Ici cles, balls of ice", that's my description of how hard the ball would be in this weather after Jen Foster took a hit to the jaw. Carly P has a nack for having balls fly at her... but her knee is OKAY. We're looking forward to upcoming results against the Vikes and T-birds to see how the cards will be dealt. Shout out to the Tony and Kinch for recovering from broken hands, and getting back ont he field. Good luck!

Pandas Soccer:

I've been fortunate enough to see the girls play twice so far this year, and they are looking good from where I was standing! They had a few good wins over the past few weekends, then ending the last weekend off with two ties against Fraser Valley and UVic. But the greatest win from these girls so far would have to be against the Bisons. I was in the hotel in Vic and the Bisons were staying in our hotel and I just giggled every time I saw them. Good job ladies, keep it up! Fro is my number #3 pick for her defensive/offensive effort, stamina and leadership, not too mention she has a great sense of humour. Amanda Black gets a VERY honorable mention for her CanWest athlete of the week!

Bears Football:

Okay so I wasn't too happy with the battle against UBC, but the Sask game was phenomenal and I'm glad they beat them! Tough little twist against the Bisons 20-13, but I'm hoping they'll come up strong for the next game. Hudsons Athlete of the week was Wasylyniuk, and CIS Defensive player of the week was Jason Hetherington, my number #1 male athlete pick. For Tendayi, he places #3, ...being an offensive tyrant and playing through a broken hand. Can't wait for the next game boys! PS: Joe thanks for teaching my how to two-step.

Bears Soccer:

I've seen the boys play as well. Good looking - lots of facial hair. This passed weekend sought to see quite a few yellow cards.... 2 for UofA and 3 for Fraser Valley. Alberta now sits at 5-1-2, which is not too bad. I'd like to see win over Trinity please! Bears pick is Kevin Perry for his goal contribution, and honorable mention to my pal Cam Black.

Reflecting back on my Top 3 athletes that you should keep an eye out for:

1. Jackie Trautman - Pandas Field Hockey
2. Allison Fairbairn - Pandas Rugby
3. Fro Mayer - Pandas Soccer

1. Jason Hetherington - Bears Football
2. Kevin Perry - Bears Soccer
3. Tendayi Jozzy - Bears Football

HOCKEY is starting up... Bears have out performed once again, so I think this might be a golden season.

I'm out for now.
